At the Base of the Volcano

Yesterday we were so blessed to have Lauren from Mission Impact come and speak to our MOPs group. At the base of a volcano in Guatemala there is a school providing education to girls who would never get education otherwise. As Lauren explained, it is cultural belief that girls are born for two things to make babies and tortillas. If you have a daughter this may hit you especially hard to think that your child if born into this culture would most likely never go to school much less have the skills necessary to get a job outside the home.
So many things touched me about Lauren's talk, but one thing that hit the hardest is that out of the 10,000 school aged children in this area there are only 600 spots at the public school of which 90% are given to boys. So that means that out of say 5,000 school aged girls there is roughly 60 spots for them in school. Not great odds. We have such opportunity in this country and so it is so difficult to grasp the vast disparity between our world and theirs. Yesterday there were 30 1st grade girls waiting for sponsorship and I know a friend has decided to pledge the $38 a month to send one to school so there are still 29 waiting. We are still thinking about the best way our family can help as well.
